Mages in World of Warcraft are not the easiest class to play, but they can be fun. It is not about the damage you deal but how you do it that matters. A mage is a ranged fighter dealing their damage from far away, doing high-damage, and controlling their enemies with spells. Mana is their best friend because it fuels their spells. So how do you play a Mage in the World of Warcraft or WoW as most of the Azeroth world calls it?

Choose a Race and Side
When choosing a race perks or racial traits come into play, some will help mages better than others. For example one race can reduce their casting times by using their racial ability while another has an area-of effect (AoE) Silence ability. Each Race also has a natural ability in crafting also, such as alchemy or jewel crafting. So take these into account before you choose your race.

Leveling and Specialization
Once your character is made and you start out into the world pick up all quests that you see. Quests will help you gain levels, as well as find armor, weapons and ingredients for crafting. Remember Mages are ranged fighters so you will need to be methodical in how you are attacking your prey. Mages die and we will die a lot this is something all mages need to learn to deal with.

Attack a target with your lowest cost spell first. Casting will also depend on your situation. If you are running from a target because your dying, cast frost nova to stop it and give you a chance to get out of its area and you chance to heal. Frostbolt will slow your target down this is a good first or second spell to cast. Finish off your target with a larger spell like Fire blast or Arcane Missiles.

Once you reach level ten you will be asked to choose a Specialization. You will have three choices Arcane, Fire, and Frost. Each tree will receive a perk for your specialization as well.

• Arcane mages can manipulate arcane energies, playing with the fabric of time and space. Their perk is arcane barrage, and they become mana adept as well increasing their mana.

• Fire Mages can ignite enemies with balls of fire they receive a perk of pyroblast and the mastery of flashburn

• Frost Mages freeze enemies in their tracks and can slow them down as well. They will receive the spell summon water elemental and the mastery frostburn.

After you choose your specialization every couple of levels you will be given a talent point to spend. These will help either give you a new ability or strengthen the ones you have.

There are a few things to remember when playing a mage. Make sure that you learn to move with your WASD and QE keys and to cast your spells with your number keys. Don't get used to clicking them it is faster to cast them with the numbers. Strafe (Q or E) away from your target don't back up you might back into another target.
