Use this Rogue PvP guide to get you started in the fun world of playing PvP with a Rogue.
The rogue in Rift isn't just a rogue.
It can be anything from a ranged killer with a pet, to a protection-warrior, through to a stealth back stabber.
In Rift, you don't really have a "best PvP build" or "best assassin build".
It all comes down to your individual style - what you like and how you play. Every build has its advantages and disadvantages, so you need to learn to live with, and work around them. Just remember to adapt your play style to these characteristics.
If you find that a rogue that doesn't really suit you, don't quit and disregard the class. Instead, totally change and adapt it to see if there isn't another build that could make your playing more enjoyable.
Let's review some of these:
Ranged: You can have Marksman, Ranger or Bard build, which is a very good build for PvP. The bard has many healing possibilities.
You won't be spending any points in Ranger, so just take it for the pet. Your points will be split between Bard (34) and Marksman (32) as you will be working ranged. The advantage of this build is that, when you get the point in Close Quarters Combat, you will be able to utilize your ranged ability in close contact.
This is a huge advantage, so get there as quickly as you can. In the meantime, you will have to avoid close combat as much as possible. You will have to run away and keep as much distance as possible to avoid being hit.
Let your pet do the damage and, eventually, use the Bard's ability for healing yourself and harming the enemy. This is not as difficult as you may think, since you have several possibilities to slow down your enemy and speed yourself up.
Melee: If you want to go melee, you have to look at other interesting builds. One could go with Riftstalker (maxed with 32 points); Bladedancer (22 points to Flash of Steel and Counterbalance at the fifth level) and then 12 points in Assassin to acquire Silent Footsteps and thus more critical hits.
This build is very resilient, and can survive many hits. In fact, it's a type of a warrior rogue. You won't be able to hit as hard as a rogue, but you can certainly stand a solid correction without becoming tired. In warfronts, you will excel in Black Garden, and be in a front line most of the time. All in all, a very resilient build.
If you prefer to forego some resilience, but be capable of hitting harder, you can take a similar build by putting 32 points in Bladedancer, but only 14 in Riftstalker (up to Rift Scavenger and Rift guard at the third level) to give you some resilience.
Then put 17 points in Assassin in almost every possible place where you can augment your hit power and crit (don't use Silent Footsteps but go to Cruel Vengeance).
With this build, you will also be more warrior-like, and have less resistance to hits. In this case, you will have to max your attack power as much as possible, but you should also be able to take care of yourself.
Stealth: This is the last build for now. You can go as an Assassin: Put 38 points in Assassin, 13 in Riftstalker and 15 in Infiltrator (PvP soul). At a later date, remove some of the Assassin points and put them in Infiltrator.
Whilst leveling, and since you won't be able to put points in the higher levels of the PvP soul before you get more prestige at level 50, you can put them in Riftstalker and Assassin, depending on whether you want more mobility and attack power, or more resilience.
This is a subtle build and great fun to play, but it will be more of a support build. You will still need to be close to allies and healing to withstand a longer fight, unless you are very well geared and can do a great deal of damage.
If you are alone, or don't have any healing, you will have to hit very hard to ensure you kill your enemy with a few blows. If you can see that this isn't possible, don't stay and fight, thus letting him gain further advantage. Stun him and disappear. You can always come back later when you have improved gear, higher level or more routine.
This is an example of four builds featuring four very different ways to fight. Take them, and change them at will to obtain what will best suit you and your style.
After all, a Rogue PvP guide should be just that - a guide.
